History

The Game Boy Color (GBC), released by Nintendo in 1998, was an upgraded version of the original Game Boy, introducing a color screen while retaining backward compatibility with the Game Boy’s extensive library. Powered by an 8-bit Sharp LR35902 CPU running at twice the speed of its predecessor (8 MHz), the GBC could display up to 56 colors simultaneously from a palette of 32,768. This allowed developers to create more visually detailed and engaging games. With popular titles like Pokémon Gold and Silver, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, and Wario Land 3, the GBC sold over 118 million units (combined with the original Game Boy), cementing its place as one of Nintendo’s most successful handheld consoles.
